Kashmir on Fast Track: Vande Bharat Bridges the Himalayas in 3 Hours

In a landmark moment for Jammu & Kashmir and India’s railway history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first-ever Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra to Srinagar on June 6, 2025. This event marked the operational launch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project, a 272-km marvel nestled in the challenging terrain of the Himalayas. With this, the long-awaited dream of linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the nation through fast, reliable rail services has finally turned into a reality, promising a new chapter in connectivity, tourism, and socio-economic growth for the region.

This new Vande Bharat Express isn’t just another addition to India’s modern train fleet—it’s a customized engineering feat tailored specifically for the extreme climate conditions of Kashmir. Designed to function flawlessly in sub-zero temperatures as low as -20°C, the train is equipped with advanced features like heated windscreens, insulated lavatories, and integrated heating systems. These adaptations will allow uninterrupted services even during the harshest Himalayan winters, ensuring year-round connectivity that the region has long been deprived of. This climate-resilient design makes the Kashmir Vande Bharat variant truly unique among India’s high-speed trains.

The train journey itself is nothing short of extraordinary. Cutting across mountain ranges and valleys, the Katra to Srinagar ride offers breathtaking views while drastically reducing travel time. The journey, which earlier took 5–6 hours by road depending on conditions, now takes just under 3 hours. With stops at key points like Banihal, the train runs on the world’s highest railway bridge—the Chenab Bridge—an engineering wonder in its own right. This route not only connects people but also bridges emotional, cultural, and economic gaps between Kashmir and the rest of India.

The service will operate daily except Tuesdays, with train number 26401 departing Katra at 8:10 AM and reaching Srinagar by 11:08 AM, while the return train 26402 leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Katra by 4:48 PM. For now, it connects the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station to Srinagar, with plans to extend service to Jammu Tawi station once redevelopment work there is complete. With this, a seamless travel corridor from Jammu to Baramulla via Srinagar is within reach, revolutionizing both pilgrim travel and tourism in the region.

This historic rail link, launched just weeks after India’s precision military operation in response to the Pahalgam attack, also sends a strong message about the government’s commitment to infrastructure-led development in the region. Beyond symbolism, the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat is a lifeline—a high-speed, climate-proof, and emotion-rich connection binding Kashmir with the rest of India. It reflects not only engineering excellence but also the hope and progress that railways can bring to the heart of the Himalayas.
