At a lavish event in Mumbai today, August 14, Kangana Ranaut's much awaited teaser for her next movie, Emergency, was unveiled. Kangana plays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, which is set in the volatile Emergency era of 1975 India. September 6, 2024 is when Emergency is scheduled to open in theatres.
An Account of the "Darkest Chapter" in India
Kangana Ranaut vividly captures the high-stakes political drama surrounding one of the most contentious eras in Indian history in Emergency. In the teaser, she plays Indira Gandhi, navigating the "darkest chapter" in the nation's history while overcoming personal obstacles, wars, and political upheaval.
Mahima Chaudhry, Shreyas Talpade, Anupam Kher, and Milind Soman are among the film's impressive ensemble cast members. Anupam Kher plays the powerful leader Jayaprakash Narayan, while Shreyas Talpade plays the part of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In a posthumous role, the late Satish Kaushik plays the former deputy prime minister Jagjivan Ram.
A Look at the Complicated Life of Indira Gandhi in the Trailer
The teaser illuminates Indira Gandhi's personal journey in addition to exploring the political climate of the era. It follows her rise in Indian politics and portrays her connection with her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Her life was powerful and tragic, like a Shakespearean tragedy, as the movie suggests.
Not a Political Drama, but a Biopic
Emergency, which Kangana Ranaut first revealed in 2021, is not a biopic of Indira Gandhi, while having political historical roots. Kangana has not only assumed the role of the main character but also that of the project's director.
