The Palghar and Thane districts of Maharashtra see the start of the bullet train project.

According to the project implementing agency, work on the 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train has begun in the districts of Palghar and Thane in Maharashtra.

The work is being done as part of package-C3 of the bullet train project, which extends from Shilphata to Zaroli village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, according to a release from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL).

We are almost done with the 135 km of geotechnical investigation. According to the statement, construction has also started on two of the mountain tunnels in this area, as well as pier foundation work at other locations.

According to the statement, casting yards are being built for girder full span and segment casting.

The 135.45 km long Package C-3 of the bullet train project consists of earth structures covering 5.361 km and viaducts and bridges spanning 24.027 km. According to NHSRCL, it also consists of 36 bridges and crossings, 12 of which are steel bridges.

According to the statement, the project also includes vital river crossings over the Ulhas, Vaitarna, and Jagani rivers, as well as six mountain tunnels and one cut-and-cover tunnel.

Three bullet train stations—at Thane, Virar, and Boisar—will appear in the segment.

Additionally, as part of the project, NHSRCL has begun building the first underwater tunnel in India, spanning 21 km between underground stations at Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata, a bordering Thane district.

Three boring machines are used to complete the tunnel work. About 16 km of the part is being made by these machines, and the last 5 km will be made using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), according to the statement.

According to the shareholding structure, the Government of India will pay Rs 10,000 crore to the NHSRCL, while the two participating states, Gujarat and Maharashtra, will pay Rs 5,000 crore each. The estimated overall cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor is Rs 1.08 lakh crore.

According to the announcement, Japan would lend the remaining amount at an interest rate of 0.1%.
